Antigen tests are more accurate than thought, experts say

Rapid antigen tests done at home are more accurate than thought and are good at detecting people who can easily transmit COVID-19, according to experts at University College London (UCL).

In the researchers’ opinion, people who test positive for antigen testing (LFT) should “have confidence” in that result and “stay home.”

After the outbreak of the pandemic in early 2020, these tests were not well regarded as they did not provide accurate results compared to the much more expensive PCRs that are done in laboratories.

British health authorities recommend having a PCR test after a positive LFT test at home to confirm if they have COVID-19.

The investigation, made public this Thursday, has been led by Irene Petersen, from the aforementioned London university.

According to that study, the rapid antigen test is 80% effective in detecting a COVID-19 infection and also detects in more than 90% which person is more infectious.

Experts consider that the test is “a very useful public health instrument” to stop the spread of the disease.

These tests are widely used at home, in British workplaces and schools.
