The Russian president, Vladimir Putinattributed the legal problems of donald trumpconvicted on criminal charges, to a “political infighting” between Democrats and Republicans ahead of the US presidential election in November.
“It is obvious throughout the world that the prosecution of Trump (…) on charges based on events that took place years ago, without direct evidence, is a mere use of the judicial system in an internal political struggle,” Putin declared in a interview in St. Petersburg with representatives of foreign media.
The former Republican president, who aspires to return to the White House, was declared last week guilty of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal in the final stages of the 2016 presidential campaign. His sentencing will be pronounced on July 11.
Putin considered it “ridiculous” to claim that Trump, who on occasions expressed admiration for the Russian leader, is a candidate more inclined to Moscow than his rival, outgoing president Joe Biden.
“We do not believe that after the elections there will be any changes regarding Russia and in American policy,” he declared.
“In general, for us there is no difference” between Biden and Trump, he said.
