Iraq requests end of UN political mission by end of 2025

Iraq This Sunday he presented a request to the Security Council of the UN and its Secretary General, António Guterres, to “reduce the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI)” and “prepare its definitive closure” at the end of 2025.

According to Iraqi government spokesman Basim Alawadi, “The circumstances that made it necessary to establish UNAMI 21 years ago no longer exist,” a position shared by the Independent Strategic Review Team of the UN Security Council, according to which “there is no need for UNAMI to continue due to significant improvements and achievements in various sectors in Iraq.”

It is expected that this organization of the UN respond to the Iraqi request later this month, and that its resolution “Also outline a mechanism to continue the supervision of certain issues in coordination with international agencies active in the country.”

The Iraqi Government expressed its gratitude to Guterres, as well as to the head of the UN mission in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and all the staff of the UNAMI for “their support over the past few years,” according to Alawadi.

He also remembered “the sacrifices of those who have served in UN missions in Iraq”, and in particular that of “Sérgio Vieira de Mello and his companions, who were victims of a terrorist attack against the mission headquarters in August 2003.”

UNAMI, which currently has “648 officers, 251 international and 397 national,” was established after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and carries out evaluation tasks and reports on the human rights situation in the country.

Likewise, it coordinates several projects carried out by the agencies of the UN and maintains a close relationship with all ministries of the Iraqi Government for its implementation, among other tasks.

The request for the end of the UNAMI It takes place at a time when Iraq has also requested the withdrawal of foreign troops present in the country within the framework of the international coalition that has been fighting against the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) since 2014, considering that the Iraqi Army is prepared to face this threat alone.
