The United States respects Spain’s position on the recognition of Palestine, according to the Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares. He did so after his meeting this Friday with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, in Washington. In line with what they point out, the two countries have a common objective and that is peace in the Middle East.
In their meeting, Blinken and Albares pointed out their common objectives on which both countries are working “together”. Blinken has specified that these points are “support for Ukraine and peace in the Middle East.” Given these coincidences, Albares has assured that they ask for “an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of all hostages and unhindered access for aid to the strip.”
A meeting in which they first signed a memorandum against disinformation, since they consider that hoaxes and manipulation are a threat to democracies. “They are threats to the national security of our countries”Blinken stated at a press conference.
And after the signing, both leaders had an hour and a half meeting in which Albares conveyed to Blinken the position of Spain to recognize Palestine as a State. A recognition, to which for the moment, Ireland and Slovenia could join as European countries that promote it. Afterwards, the Spanish minister stated that “Blinken respects Spain’s position, but has not expressed his opinion on the matter.”
However, and in response to questions from journalists, Albares did not want to confirm whether it will finally be in the Council of Ministers on May 21 when Spain recognizes the State of Palestine. The important thing is to say, it is not the day, but the decision has been made.
