The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas reported that his delegation had left Egypt following negotiations for a truce in Loop and said whate “the ball is now completely in the court” of Israel.
“The negotiating delegation left Cairo in the direction of Doha. “The occupation rejected the proposal presented by the mediators that we had accepted,” the group said in reference to Israel in a letter sent to other Palestinian factions.
“Consequently, the ball is now completely in the occupation’s court,” Hamas added.
The Egyptian media Al Qahera News, close to that country’s intelligence services, reported that the delegations of Hamas and Israel had left Cairo “after two days of negotiations” to obtain a truce after seven months of war.
The efforts of Egypt, Qatar and the United States as mediating countries in these indirect negotiations “continue to bring the points of view of both parties closer together,” this media stated, citing a high-level Egyptian source.
Hamas had accepted on Monday a proposal presented by mediators that, according to a senior official in the movement, establishes a three-phase truce, each lasting 42 days.
It also includes Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and an exchange of hostages taken by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners in the Hebrew country with the aim of “a permanent ceasefire.”
Israel replied that the proposal remains “far from their demands.” and reiterated his opposition to a permanent ceasefire until achieving a complete victory over this group that, like the United States and the European Union, he classifies as terrorist.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered his delegation in Cairo to “continue to be firm on the conditions necessary for release” of hostages and “essential” for the security of Israel.
