EU asks TikTok for information about new plan to remunerate users

The European Commission, the executive arm of the EUasked this Wednesday for information from the network TikTok about a new product launched in Spain and France that remunerates its users, and that could cause addiction.

In a note, the Commission announced that it required TikTok to present information on risk studies on the new initiative, especially with regard to the protection of minors.

“This refers to the potential impact of the new program (…) on the protection of minors, as well as the mental health of users, especially in relation to the potential stimulation of addictive behaviors“said the statement.

The new service, called “Task and Rewards lite”, had been announced by TikTok on April 11 in France and Spain.

Now, TikTok must present its risk assessment study within 24 hours, and respond to several questions from the Commission by April 26.

TikTok’s new plan includes a “Rewards Program” through points to users who complete tasks such as watching a complete video, expressing “likes”, following content creators and inviting their contacts to join TikTok.

These points can be exchanged for vouchers for purchases on Amazon or resources on the PayPal payment network.

In February of this year, the Commission already began a formal investigation against TikTok for its practices regarding the protection of minors, advertising transparency or access to personal data.

A TikTok spokesperson simply commented this Wednesday that “We have already been in contact with the Commission about this product, and we will respond to requests for information.”
