Rain of criticism against Nike for the revealing style of the Paris 2024 women’s uniform

The uniforms made by Nike for the American women’s athletics team for the Paris 2024 Games have received a shower of criticism in recent days from athletes, coaches and fans for their style considered excessively revealing and sexist.

Last week in Paris, Nike presented its men’s and women’s athletics uniforms, and the design of its version for athletes provoked the indignation of many athletes for having a very high cut in the pubic area.

The Oregon brand defended its work by highlighting that it made the uniforms focusing on the wishes of its athletes and stressed that each athlete can choose the style that they consider most comfortable for competing.

Lauren Fleshman, a former American athlete who was a national champion in the 5000 meters in the 2000s, considered that the cut of these uniforms is not adequate to maximize performance.

“Professional athletes should be able to compete without dedicating brain space to constant pubic surveillance or the mental gymnastics of having every vulnerable part of their body on display.”he wrote in a message posted on his Instagram account.

It’s a view that has been shared by several athletes, such as jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall, also surprised by the revealing style of the uniform.

In this sense, it is worth highlighting the fact that Sha’Carri Richardson, world champion in Budapest 2023, presented the uniforms in Paris wearing the version with shorts.

Nike, every athlete can choose

In the official statement presenting the uniforms, Nike highlighted that the “voice of athletes” was at the center when designing the product.

“To create each uniform, Nike design teams started with the voice of the athletes, obsessing over every detail to offer options that satisfy desires for choice, comfort and performance, and in sports such as track and field, with different disciplines”assures the brand.

“With nearly 50 pieces to choose from in men’s and women’s athletics and a dozen competition styles tailored for specific events, athletes can choose uniforms that meet their personal style and preference without sacrificing comfort during the Games,” is added in the note.

The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
