The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrellhas warned after Iran’s drone attack on Israel that steps are being taken towards a conflict that can destabilize the entire region and affect us all and we must “put on the brakes and turn back.”
In an interview on Onda Cero, Borrell agreed with the UN Secretary General by pointing out that “We are on the edge of the precipice and we must move away from it”. The high representative believes that Iran launched an attack “without seeking civilian targets” and that the 300 drones were launched so that they could be located.
However, he has expressed confidence that Israel will respond to this attack although he hopes it does not lead to an escalation of the conflict because “it is time to stop, it is time to prevent the war from spreading and to also stop it in Gaza.”
Regarding the EU’s current relationship with Iran, Borrell recognizes that it is “a complicated relationship” and that currently the pact to keep its nuclear program under control “is frozen.” “Europe is interested in having the best relations with Iran knowing what we know about its political regime, having made all the condemnations and with all the sanctions that the EU has imposed on it,” he defended.
Furthermore, Borrell has pointed out that Iran is “an important regional actor and at this moment more important than ever” so “we must talk to it.” “It is in everyone’s best interest for the Middle East to pacify a little”he stated.
