The innovative DragonFire laser will be installed on Royal Navy warships for the first time from 2027, earlier than initially planned, providing effective defense against drones and missilesThe Ministry of Defense reported this Friday.
The laser is capable of firing at any visible target in the air with an accuracy equivalent to hitting a coin a kilometer away, according to Defense.
These weapons were expected to be deployed on warships in 2032.
“In a more dangerous world, our approach to procurement is changing with it. We need to be more urgent, more critical and more global”Defense Minister Gran Shapps said in a statement.
“DragonFire shows the best of United Kingdom at the forefront of military technology, and we will not delay putting it in the hands of our military to confront the threats we face.”he added.
