The G7 countries ““strongly condemned” and unanimouslythe Iranian attack on Israel, for which they showed “their full support” and called for moderation “to avoid a further escalation” in the Middle East, after the meeting of less than an hour that they held this Saturday by videoconference, chaired by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who holds the current presidency.
“We express our full solidarity and support for Israel and its people and we reaffirm our commitment to their safety. With its actions, Iran has taken another step towards destabilizing the region and risks causing an uncontrollable regional escalation,” they said in a statement sent by the White House.
Likewise, they have indicated that they are working “to stabilize the situation”, while they have also asked Iran and its allies to “cease your response to new destabilizing steps,” have added.
In a statement, the Italian Government explained that the leaders of Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Germany and Canadain addition to those of the European Union (EU), “urge the parties to refrain from any action aimed at increasing tension in the region.”
The Middle East is facing a moment of maximum tension after the attack on Israel by Iran, which launched more than 300 drones, missiles and ballistic missiles in what represents the first attack of this type from Iranian soil, waiting to see what the possible Israeli response will be.
EU leaders to discuss Middle East
The presidents and prime ministers of the countries of the European Union (EU) will discuss the situation in the Middle East during the leaders’ summit scheduled in Brussels for next Thursday, April 18, as announced this Sunday by the president of the European Council, Charles Michel.
The heads of State and Government of the Twenty-seven will debate this issue after the attacks launched last night by Iran against Israel in response to the bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, the last April 1.
At the moment, only two points of the day appeared on the provisional agenda for next Thursday’s summit: discussing a new European agreement for competitiveness and the situation in Türkiye and its relationship with the EU.
Michel announced the inclusion of the crisis in the Middle East in the discussions at the summit of EU leaders through a message on the social network to analyze the consequences of the Iranian attack against Israel.
