The G-7 and the UN Security Council meet urgently this Sunday after Iran’s attack on Israel with 200 projectiles and drones against Israeli territory that has been repelled “99%.”

US President Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of his support for Iran in the phone call they both had and announced that he will convene his G7 counterparts to coordinate a diplomatic response. “Tomorrow I will convene my fellow G-7 leaders to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack,” the US president said.

A request that has had a quick affirmative response from the Italian president of the G-7, who has called this Sunday a video conference with the leaders of the world’s seven richest democracies to discuss the Iranian attack on Israel, official sources reported. The meeting called by the Government that presides Giogia Meloni will take place in the early European afternoonaccording to the same sources.

Meloni, for his part, has been following the escalation in the Middle East with maximum attention and concern in recent hours, together with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and of Defense, Guido Crosetto, and Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, Delegated Authority for the Security. “The Government is ready to handle any type of scenario,” Tajani explained on RAI public television, highlighting that “Italy’s role is to invite everyone to be prudent to avoid the explosion of a crisis that no one wants to exist” and showing his desire “for Iran’s response to stop tonight’s attack.” According to local media, Italian authorities are monitoring all targets considered sensitive in Italy, following the offensive launched by Iran.

The UN Security Council also meets this Sunday

The UN Security Council also holds an emergency session this Sunday, requested by Israelto address the attacks that Iran launched today against the Jewish state and some of its occupied territories.

The meeting was requested by the Israeli ambassador Gilad Erdan and shortly after accepted by the Maltese presidency, which this month heads the Council and will take place at four in the afternoon local time. Israel had requested that this meeting serve “to unequivocally condemn Iran” for its “serious violations” and to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (elite military body) as a terrorist organization.

In a statement explaining his request to convene the Council, Ambassador Erdan recalls that “the severity and volume of these attacks are unprecedented,” and affirms that “Iran poses a direct threat to international peace, which openly violates the UN charter and Security Council resolutions.

Council unlikely to reach any common positiongiven the deep division that exists in all Middle East conflicts and that Russia and China (with veto rights in the Council) count Iran among their allies.
