Tedros Adhanom: Vaccines remain effective against both the delta and omicron variants of the coronavirus

WHO Director indicated that most hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 are unvaccinated.

The “vast majority” of current hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 in the world are of unvaccinated people, warned today the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“We must be very clear that the vaccines remain effective against both the delta and omicron variants of the coronavirus,” Tedros stressed at a press conference.

“It should be a priority to achieve 40% vaccination rates in all countries as soon as possible, and that this rate reaches 70% before mid-year,” added the Ethiopian expert.

Tedros reiterated his opposition to widespread population-wide booster dose programs, warning that they “could prolong the pandemic rather than end it” as they divert supplies that should go to countries with low COVID immunization rates. -19.
