The memoirs of the deceased Russian opponent Alexei Navalny, recently died in a prison, which will be titled “PATRIOT” will be published in October, its American publisher announced this Thursday.
“It is the complete story of his life: his youth, his activist vocation, his marriage and his family, and his commitment to the cause of Russian democracy and freedom in the face of a world superpower determined to silence him,” announced editor Knopf.
To his widow, Yulia Navalnaya, “This book is a testimony not only of Alexei’s life, but of his unwavering commitment to the fight against the dictatorship, a fight for which he gave everything, including his life.”
The main Russian opponent of Vladimir Putin’s regime died in February while serving a sentence in an Arctic prison, one of the harshest in the country.
“Sharing his story will not only honor his memory, but will also inspire others to stand up for what is right and never lose sight of the values that truly matter.”adds Navalyana in a statement from the publisher.
The book will have an initial print run of 500,000 copies and will go on sale worldwide on October 22. According to his wife, it has already been translated into 11 languages.
Initiated shortly after his poisoning by the secret services of Vladimir Putin’s regime in 2020, from which he miraculously recovered in a hospital in Germany, in his memoirs Navalny expresses his “total conviction that change cannot be resisted and that it will come” in Russia.
“It is not at all the way I imagined Alexei would write his biography,” said his wife on the social networkunexpectedly”, “he quickly found himself caught up in them”.
“Today is the end of secrets. Alexei’s book, which he started writing in Germany and ended up in prison, will be published,” said his spokesperson Kira Yarmish.
They include correspondence from prison and recount his political career, the numerous attempts on his life and those of those closest to him, and the campaign that he and his team waged against the Putin regime.
It is, according to its editorial, a “moving account of the last years he spent in the most brutal prison on the planet; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so much; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.”
