Mexico filed a lawsuit against Ecuador before an international court for attacking the embassy

This Thursday, Mexico filed a lawsuit against Ecuador before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague for the assault on the Mexican embassy in Quito last Friday, the Foreign Ministry reported.

Mexico seeks “the suspension of Ecuador as a member of the United Nations Organization until a public apology is issued recognizing the violations of the fundamental principles and norms of international law, with the purpose of guaranteeing reparation for the moral damage inflicted on the Mexican State and its national“said Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena at a press conference.

Police forces stormed the embassy last Friday night to capture former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, accused of corruption and who hours before had received political asylum from Mexico.

Due to this, the Mexican government broke relations with Ecuador and announced the lawsuit in The Hague.

Today we proudly present a complaint before the International Court of Justice. The term is ‘request to initiate proceedings’ (…). There is no doubt, Ecuador violated the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations by violating the immunity of the embassy“said Alejandro Celorio, legal consultant to the Foreign Ministry, along with Bárcena.

The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said at the same conference that what is sought is “that it is not repeated in any country in the world, that international law is guaranteed, that the premises, the embassies of countries of any nation are not violated”.

The lawsuit was filed a day after the Organization of American States (OAS) condemn “strongly” the raid.
