The CNN news channel reported this Wednesday that together with NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox News it has written a letter addressed to Biden and Trump with that request, to which the five networks hope other media will join.
The letter, which has not yet been completed or sent to the campaign teams of the two expected candidates in the November 5 elections, points out that the electoral debates have “played a vital role in every presidential election of the last 50 years, since 1976” and together they have gathered an audience of “tens of millions” of citizens.
Therefore, the signatories of the letter urge Biden and Trump, who have yet to be nominated candidates by their respective parties, but have no rivals in sight, “to publicly commit to participating in the debates (…) before the November elections.”
“While it is too early to invite any candidate, it is not too early for candidates who hope to meet the eligibility criteria to publicly express their support and intention to participate in the planned Commission (nonpartisan Presidential Debates) debates.” for this fall,” says the letter.
Biden has not publicly committed to debating Trump, although he does not rule it out. “It depends on your behavior,” Biden said in early March, as highlighted by CNN.
For his part, Trump has published on social networks that he will debate “Anytime and anywhere” despite the fact that in 2022 the Republican National Committee voted unanimously to withdraw from the Commission on Presidential Debates.
In the 2020 elections, when Biden and Trump already competed for the White House and the first of them was the winner, the Commission took the extraordinary measure of silencing both of their microphones during part of the debates due to the second’s repeated verbal outbursts.
“If there is one thing Americans can agree on during this polarized time, it is that the stakes in this election are exceptionally high,” the television networks state in the letter.
“Amid that backdrop, there is simply no substitute for candidates debating among themselves and before the American people their visions for the future of our nation,” they add.
