The issue of “Contact Glass” broadcast on May 15, 2023 caused a small image crisis of the famous TVN24 satirical program. At the end of the episode, the hosts Tomasz Sianecki and Krzysztof Daukszewicz mocked the words of PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński and minister Michał Wójcik, in which they mocked transgender people, saying about themselves that they “feel like women”.
Last year’s “prank” took its toll on “Contact Lens.” The station’s journalists did not reach an agreement
A moment later, they connected with the station’s journalist, Piotr Jacoń, who runs the “Dzień po Dzień” magazine, broadcast after “Szkle”. Then Daukszewicz said “And what gender is he today?”, to which Jacoń reacted by looking down and giving him a scolding look. Initially, the hosts of the show did not understand why there was such a reaction from the journalist, who in private is the father of a transgender child.
But a few seconds later, during the end credits, Daukszewicz said to Sianecki: “I think I was being stupid.” The situation received wide coverage in the media. The station’s broadcaster quickly issued a statement apologizing to all viewers for these words, especially the LGBTQ+ community.
After this situation, Daukszewicz decided to leave the program, which received a huge wave of hate. Jacoń himself later commented on the situation on social media with these words: “There is nothing worse (because nothing more effective) than transphobia, homophobia, racism or anti-Semitism, which are the laughing language of contempt.” In turn, in solidarity with Daukszewicz, Artur Andrus and Robert Górski also decided to leave the program. The latter explained his decision this way:
In this way, in solidarity with Krzysztof and in disagreement with the similarity of TVN24 to TVP Info, as a guest of ‘Szkła…’, I would like to thank you very much for your hospitality. The station is destroying an innocent man and that’s why I don’t want to support it with my presence. Thank you Tomek and Wojtek. I will remember you fondly, just like the others I met thanks to ‘Szkło’…
Another penalty for TVN24. The broadcaster did not convince the National Broadcasting Council, which is concerned about vulgarity
After almost a year, few viewers remember this situation, but the chairman of the National Broadcasting Council, Maciej Świrski, remembered it. The regulator decided to punish the broadcaster TVN24 for the vulgarity that viewers heard on air during the end credits of “Contact Glass”.
“The broadcaster’s explanations of May 29, 2023 in the part regarding the rights of people belonging to the LGBTQ+ community do not fit into the merits of the case specified in Article 18(7) of the Act. The broadcast used vulgar language, the broadcast of which constitutes a violation of Article 18(7) of the Act. 7 of the Act, according to which “broadcasters shall ensure the correctness of the language of their programs and prevent its vulgarization” – we read in the letter from the National Broadcasting Council.
“The dissemination of messages containing vulgar language leads to the promotion of obscene language and contributes to the perpetuation of unacceptable social behavior. After analyzing the harmfulness of the violation, which was considered to be higher than negligible, the Chairman of the National Broadcasting Council decided to impose a fine on TVN SA in the amount of PLN 19,526.45, which is one ten thousandth of its statutory maximum amount, calculated as 10% of the revenue, which amounted to PLN 1,952,645,000,” informed the National Broadcasting Council. The sender may appeal against the court’s decision.
