Argentina deregulates mobile phone, internet and cable TV prices

The government of Javier Milei deregulated the prices of mobile telephony, internet and cable television, by canceling, through publication in the Official Gazette this Wednesday, a decree of the Administration of Alberto Fernández (2019-2023).

The published decree justifies the decision that information and communication technology (ICT) services “have been created in competition, as well as the provision of mobile communications services, with the possibility that licensees can freely set the prices of their services being an essential faculty for their development and growth.”

On the other hand, the basic telephone service maintains its status as a public service.

As recalled, a decree signed by Fernández in 2020 declared ICT services – mobile and landline telephony, internet services and pay TV – as “essential and strategic public services.”

That decree enabled the enforcement authority to regulate the prices of those declared essential and strategic public services; Likewise, it forced it to regulate a mandatory universal basic benefit for licensees.

The decree signed by Milei indicates that the application of the regulatory changes introduced by Fernández has been “limited”, due to judicial resolutions obtained by the licensees to avoid it.

This decision by the Milei Government is part of the libertarian’s policy of deregulating the economy and occurs in a context in which it is fighting to lower inflation, which in February climbed to 276.2% annually.
