The Junts per Catalunya MEP Toni Comín will finally be the candidate of the pro-independence party in the next European elections. As laSexta has learned, the Catalan leader, who was competing with the president of the party’s local group in Gandesa (Tarragona), Joan Josep Florensato head the European JxCat list, has been chosen by the militancy with 77% of the votes.
Shortly before the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont announced that he would run in the Catalan elections, Comín ran as head of the Junts list for the European elections to be held on June 9. “It is premature to say it yet, but we have thought that if he -Puigdemont- cannot head the European list, I headed it“, he assured at the time.
Comín arrived at the European Parliament as a deputy in 2019 alongside Puigdemont. Precisely, in a recent interview given to RAC1, the former Catalan president stated that he would “love” for Comín to repeat as an MEP because he has done “an exceptional job” and because it is a project that they both started “together”. Likewise, Puigdemont also considered that “it would not be understood” that at a time when they intend to lead Catalonia, they would abandon “the European trench.”
