The highest-grossing directors in history, according to “Variety” magazine

The Canadian director James Cameron has become the highest grosser in the history of cinema with three films among the four that have achieved the highest grossing so far, while the Spanish Juan Antonio Bayona has slipped into 21st place with one of the sequels to “Jurassic World”.

According to data published by the specialized magazine “Variety”, “Avatar” (2009) and its sequel “Avatar: the path of water” (Avatar, The Way of Water), from 2022, both directed by Cameron, remain in the number 1 and 3 positions, respectively, with more than US $ 5.2 billion worldwide grossed together.

In second place is “Avengers: Endgame” (Avengers: Endgame) (2019), from the Marvel factory and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, which has raised $2.7 billion.

The drama “Titanic” (1997), also by James Cameron, remains in fourth place with a collection of more than 2.2 billion, followed by one of the sequels to the Star Wars saga, “Star Wars: Episode VII, The Force Awakens” (Star Wars: The Force Awakens)(2015), with a gross of just over 2,000 million.

On the list of the thirty highest-grossing films in history, it appears in 21st place.Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” (Jurassic World: fallen kingdom), from 2018 and directed by the Spanish Juan Antonio Bayona, which has raised US$ 1.3 billion.

Variety” recalls that several of the films at the top of this list were released in the last decade, benefiting from today’s higher ticket prices, although each of them has demonstrated enough staying power at the global box office to break records after record.

This list is not adjusted for inflation and determining the best films of all time at the time of their release is an imperfect science, the specialized magazine acknowledges.

But if only the releases in the United States and Canada are analyzed, it is estimated that the best films adjusted to the real proportional value in collection at the time are “Gone with the Wind”, “Star Wars” ( Star Wars), “The Sound of Music,” “ET The Extra-Terrestrial,” and “Titanic.”
