An Iranian man was rummaging through the trash when he found a bag with gold and money equivalent to about $38,000, and went out of his way to find its owner and return it to him, a newspaper reported Monday.
“My parents taught me that you have to return what belongs to others when you find it.”“This honest resident of Aligudarz, a city in western Iran, told the newspaper Etemad.
On March 22, the 52-year-old discovered the small fortune by rummaging through abandoned trash cans on the street.
“When I started sorting through the trash, I realized that inside a bag there was gold and dollars.” for an estimated value of 20,000 million rials (about US$38,000), he said.
“I kept the gold and dollars for a few days, but I couldn’t keep them” due to the principles of honesty that his parents instilled in him, he added.
He claims to have found the owner of the bag thanks to a bank card that was inside.
The gold and dollars belonged to a woman in her fifties whose grandson had thrown away the bag thinking it contained trash.
