Biden seeks to obtain freedom for US journalist imprisoned in Russia

One year after the arrest in Russia by journalist Evan Gershkovich of the Wall Street Journal, the president Joe Biden assured that USA constantly manages its release. The newspaper on Friday published a large blank space on the front page, with a pencil portrait of Gershkovich in the classic newspaper style and the headline “Your article about him should be here.”

“Journalism is not a crime and Evan went to Russia to do his job as a reporter, putting his safety at risk to shine the light of truth about Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine,” Biden said in a statement on Friday.

Gershkovich He was arrested during a trip to Yekaterinburg, a city in the Ural Mountains. He Federal Security Service, known by the acronym FSBclaims that he went in search of state secrets by order of USA, but has not presented evidence. The Journal and the US government deny this, and Washington classifies him as unjustly detained.

Audiences as the only means

A recent court hearing provided little information about the case. He was ordered to remain jailed until at least June 30, the fifth extension of his detention. However, regular hearings at least allow family and friends, as well as US authorities, to see him. And for the 32-year-old journalist they mean a change in the monotonous prison routine.

Biden He said in his statement that he will never lose hope. “We will continue working every day to obtain his release.”. Additionally, we will continue to denounce and impose costs on Russia for its outrageous attempts to use Americans as bargaining chips. And we will remain firm against all those who try to attack the press or journalists, the pillars of a free society.”

Another American accused of espionage in Russia is Paul Whelan, a business executive from Michigan. He was arrested in 2018 and sentenced to two years in prison and then 16. Whelan, who says he went to Moscow to attend a friend’s wedding, maintains that he is innocent and that the accusations are false.
