Olaf Scholz He speaks openly about the possibility of opening “a peace process” in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In an interview with the ‘Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung’, the German Chancellor says that security advisers from “several countries”, including Ukraine, are discussing how a “peace process“.

“But let me make one thing very clear: peace is possible at any time. All Putin has to do is suspend his barbaric campaign and withdraw the troops – from Ukraine -“, says Scholz in this interview, in which he emphasizes that “mediation initiatives” have “always” been taken.

Scholz rules out sending German soldiers to Ukraine and defends that his country is the one that delivers the most weapons and ammunition to the country. “We will do everything possible so that the war does not escalate, that is, a war between Russia and NATO,” he adds.

There have always been mediation initiatives. For example, immediately after the war broke out, Russia and Ukraine negotiated directly with each other. The talks failed because Russia only used them as a pretext to simultaneously move its troops east for a major offensive. Then the Bucha and Irpin massacres came to light (…). “This deprived the talks of any basis,” says Scholz.
