Francesca Albanese is the UN special rapporteur to defend human rights in the Palestinian territories and a few days ago she presented a report in which she concluded that Israel with its actions in the Gaza Strip is committing genocide. During the press conference in which he presented the results of this analysis, a journalist asked him about the existence of Israeli official documents in which this intention is confirmed.

The question arises after Albanese assured that some statements by Israeli authorities – including prime minister, president and military officials – reflected the Jewish State’s intention to commit genocide in the area after the Hamas attacks of October 7th.

Somewhat annoyed, the UN rapporteur asks him another question: “Do you believe that in Rwanda and Bosnia and Herzegovina some government official has written in a document ‘I want to commit genocide’?” However, he has not avoided answering the question to which he has categorically said no.

In this regard, he explained that the report is based on the observation of “genocides and the jurisprudence developed on this type of cases”, which he has emphasized shows “clearly” that the “intention may be direct” if the public statements of the Israeli authorities are taken into account. Speeches that he considers totally “dehumanized” and that form “only the tip of the iceberg.”

Furthermore, he has highlighted with visible forcefulness that the evocation of violence by these senior officers has not occurred “once, nor twice, but continuously for months.” Along these lines, he has argued that proof of this is the behavior of the Israeli troops on the field.

During his speech he addressed the journalist again: “If you read my report you will see that I have cited official documents and the legal justification for the use of force by Israel”, documents that, however, he called “humanitarian camouflage.” . Regarding this issue, he wanted to emphasize that Israel’s objective is to “eradicate Hamas” – this is found in official documents – however, this It is not “a real military objective because one thing is to destroy the military capacity of an organization and another is to also include civilian elements.”
