If there is a famous tower in Italy, it is Pisa. The monument, however, was so inclined that the authorities had to intervene to prevent it from falling. Now, the phenomenon is repeated again, but this time in Bologna: there, the Garisenda towerwhich dates back to the 12th century, has been closed since last year by the risk of collapse.
With four degrees of inclinationa report warned a few weeks ago of danger of imminent collapse of Garisenda, one of the famous Towers of Bologna. Immediately, the square was closed and perimeter was surrounded with containers so that, if it were to fall, the debris would cause as little damage as possible.
Is about one of the symbols of the citya medieval skyscraper built in the year 1109 whose deterioration has accelerated in recent decades. Experts blame the material with which the base is built and the extraction of too much water from the subsoil, which would have weakened the stone, causing it to sink.
If we look at the images collected in the video, we can see that the tower seems to be missing a section. And, indeed, a part was already demolished in the 14th century: It originally measured 60 meters and was cut down to 48 meters.
The good news is that Italy has experience with this type of problem and the best example is just 174 kilometers away: the tower of Pisa. This already tilted during its construction and was corrected on the upper floors, but that inclination increased over the centuries, until a few decades ago.
The same tools will now be used with Garisenda: a series of metallic structures They will hold up the tower and will inject mortar underground to secure the terrain, in an operation against the clock to save a piece of history.
