New York expects “hundreds of thousands” of visitors to see the solar eclipse

Governor Kathy Hochul assured that NY is ready to receive the “hundreds of thousands” of visitors who are expected to arrive attracted by the first solar eclipse over the north of the state in 99 years, on April 8.

“The eclipse is a once-in-a-generation experience and there is no better place to see it than in our beautiful state,” Hochul stated.

The governor warned the public to prepare for the high volume of traffic and reminded them to wear appropriate eye protection, arrive early at the eclipse viewing location, bring water and snacks, and stay late to avoid congestion on the road.

Due to the large concentration of traffic expected towards the northern part of the state (Upper State) where the eclipse will be best seen, construction work and temporary lane closures will be suspended.

He recalled that the total eclipse will cover 29 counties in the western and northern parts of the state, although in other areas it will be between 88 and 99 percent. The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the United States will not be until August 2044, he said in a statement.

He also urged New Yorkers to protect themselves from potential scams, fake merchandise and fake lodging listings.

According to the governor, public safety challenges for such an event include traffic management, communication capabilities, and public health and safety.

New York State Parks and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will host events on April 8 and in the weeks leading up to the eclipse.

Hochul highlighted that in October 2022 he appointed a work team made up of personnel from various government agencies who from that moment began to work to guarantee New Yorkers and visitors “a safe and memorable viewing experience”.

He also reported that starting next April 4, scientists, experts in the field and NASA astronauts will participate in events and there will be exhibitions in the Niagara Falls State Park, as well as throughout the city.
