Unemployment in Chile reaches 8.5% in the quarter from December to February

Unemployment in Chili It marked the sixteenth consecutive annual increase and stood at 8.5% in the December 2023 – February 2024 quarter, which meant an increase of 0.1 points in 12 months, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported this Thursday.

This increase in unemployment was due to the fact that the increase in the labor force (3.2%) was greater than that of employed people (3.1%), mainly in sectors such as commerce, health activities and education.

The labor force in Chile – people willing and able to work in the labor market – was 10.1 million people in this period. The unemployed, meanwhile, totaled 865,300, according to the data provided by the INE survey.

The informal employment rate between last December and February reached 27.4%. In the Metropolitan region of Santiago – where almost half of Chile’s 20 million inhabitants live – unemployment stood at 9.3%, a decrease in 12 months of 0.4 percentage points, stated the public entity.
