The decrease in the birth rate, decrease in migration and the Covid-19 pandemic would be part of the main reasons, according to the census.
The population of the United States grew by only 0.1% between April 2020 and April 2021, which is the lowest rate of increase in the entire history of the country, and that the Census Bureau attributes in large part to the effects of the pandemic.
According to the data published this Tuesday by the census, in the aforementioned period the population went from 331.4 to 331.8 million people, and increased by 444,464, which is only the 0,13%.
This slow growth can be attributed, according to the census, the decline in migration, the decreased fertility and the increase in mortality in the country, due in large part to the pandemic.
In this sense, the demographer Kristie Wilder, from the Census Population Division, points out that the pandemic has caused the “combination” of the aforementioned factors to lead to these historical data.
Births in Uruguay with historical loss; from nearly 49,000 in 2015 to less than 36,000 in 2020
Between July 2020 and July 2021, population growth was due to the “Natural increase”, which is how the difference between the number of births and the number of deaths is called, and that was placed in 148,043 people.

In that period, the migratory differential was 244,622 (the difference between the number of people entering the country and the number leaving).
According to the Census, it is the first time in history that the migratory differential outperforms natural growth.

In 11 of the states in which the population fell, the losses were above 10,000 people, another historical data according to the Census report. (I)
