Metal detector finds largest gold nugget ever found in England

A man specialized in metals came across the nugget of gold largest ever found in England after just 20 minutes of searching for these materials with its sensor, according to British media reports this Thursday.

The lucky one is Richard Brock, 67, who has been using metal sensors in England for 35 years and found the valuable piece after unearthing the 64.8 gram nugget.

The discovery occurred in May last year in Shropshire, western England, when Brock joined an expedition organized in farmland in that English county.

Although his metal detector was not fully operational, Brock – who lives in Somerset (southwest England) – expects the nugget to fetch £30,000 (35,100 euros) at auction.

I’ve been spotting since 1989 and decided to join the trip as a previous similar one to Australia was canceled during the pandemic. So I drove three and a half hours to Shropshire and arrived about an hour late, thinking I had missed the action.the expert told the media.

“At first, I found some old, rusty stakes with this detector,” but “after only 20 minutes of scanning the ground,” He found the nugget buried about 13 centimeters deep.

“Maybe I was too honest and started showing it to people, and suddenly I had a swarm of other people scanning the same area. The machine I was using was practically defective. It only half worked. It just goes to show that it really doesn’t matter what equipment you use.” he explained.

In the soil where it was scanned there was a large amount of rock originally from Wales, where gold and copper were intensively mined during the Bronze Age.

The discovery was made at a site believed to have been an ancient railroad track or path, containing stone possibly distributed from Wales. Brock has said he will split the auction proceeds with the landowner.
