The authorities did not specify the port from which the container left.
The National Aeronaval Service (Senan) of Panama seized a shipment of 3,097 packages of drugs inside a container on a ship originating from Ecuador and bound for the United Kingdom.
The illicit substance, not determined by its weight and type, was found on a ship at a port terminal in the Caribbean province of Colón.
The Senan said in a statement this Monday that the illegal containerized cargo was on board a merchant ship that arrived from a South American country in transit through Panama to Europe, without further details.
Local media reported that the ship came from Ecuador and was destined for the city of London, in the United Kingdom.
After the search and search of the container, the agents of the Naval Air Force, together with personnel from the Colón Drug Prosecutor’s Office and the Guna Yala region, counted 53 bundles with 3,097 drug packages.
The Senan highlighted that in 2021 they have carried out 139 operations and achieved the seizure of 86,187 packages of illicit substances.
In turn, the authorities have described 2021 as a “successful” year against drug trafficking after dismantling two cells of the Clan del Golfo de Colombia and seizing “historic” amounts of drugs and money linked to organized crime.
Near the end of the year, drug seizures in Panama, a country used for the transit of narcotics, exceed 119 tons, a record figure, since last year 84.87 tons were seized. (I)
