The European Union announced this Monday that it evacuated its staff from Haitiwhere the capital, Port-au-Prince, is going through a serious security crisis following a spiral of violence unleashed by armed gangs that confront the police.
“We have removed EU staff from Haiti,” Peter Stano, spokesman for the diplomatic division of the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, said Monday.
According to the spokesperson, the EU is “extremely concerned” with the situation in Haiti, where attacks on hospitals and prisons, food shortages and blocked infrastructure were recorded.
“In response to the dramatic deterioration of the situation, we took the decision to reduce our activities on the ground and moved the staff of the EU delegation in Port-au-Prince to a safer location, outside the country.”Stano said.
The EU has essential staff still working “but not from Haiti”he added.
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) called an emergency meeting in Jamaica to discuss the serious situation in Haiti. Invitations to that meeting have been sent to France, Canada and the UN.
