Polish cinema? “F***ing thief.” Why Krystyna Janda doesn’t act in films anymore

“I don’t get any offers, none at all. A new generation of directors has come and I am not interested in them,” said Krystyna Janda when asked why she stopped acting in films. And contemporary Polish cinema responds briefly: “f***ing thief.”

The appearance of Krystyna Janda in the refreshed TVP format “A hundred questions to…” caused quite a stir on the Internet. The actress returned to public television after many years. She was not allowed to appear on TVP due to her openly expressed views – to put it mildly, incompatible with those presented by the so-called good change. Now she was invited to a program that was entirely devoted to her. Viewers received Krystyna Janda in a high, concentrated dose that had not been available in recent years, not only on TVP, but on any television in general. This is already an event.

The reception of the actress on the Internet is – to use a euphemism – not very favorable. The comments under the recording of the episode of “A Hundred Questions for…” with her participation, posted on YouTube, are practically impossible to quote, they are so hateful and offensive. The fact that they practically do not refer to Janda’s statements is already a standard on the Internet. “I don’t like her, neither as an actress nor as a person” (original spelling) – this is one of the mildest comments. But we also have to blame Janda and quote the famous interview from a few years ago, in which she said that Jarosław Kaczyński’s words made her feel “like someone was shitting on her.” There was also a comparison that she was as discredited as Jaruzelski and Kiszczak [sic!].

Okay, so what did she actually say? What caused such outrage? I watched the entire hour with Krystyna Janda so you wouldn’t have to. And I’m telling you.

In fact, you have to wait almost until the very end of the program for the most interesting moment. The formula is such that, apart from the leading journalist and the above-mentioned Krystyna Janda, there were a dozen or so people in the studio who also asked questions. They were mainly journalists dealing with film and theater. Invited min. representatives of “Gazeta Wyborcza”, “Rzeczpospolita”, Radio 357 and naEkranie.pl. This group asked why Krystyna Janda doesn’t act in films anymore. And here was the most interesting answer.

– I don’t get any offers, none. A new generation of directors has come and I am not interested in them – said the actress, which admitted that she might get some, but not ones that would interest her. – I get offers to be the mother of a drug addict, a bandit, or some such person – she said.

– There are no films about the intelligentsia, and I am the intelligentsia on the screen – Krystyna Janda continued. Then she noted that “Sweet End of the Day” (the 2018 film in which she starred) “was the only moment that touched on her emploi at all.” However, she briefly described Polish cinematography in recent years: “fuckin’ thief”.

After the episode was broadcast, comments appeared that the actress was detached from reality. However, her other statements in the same program contradict this thesis. For example, when asked about her career abroad, she said that she had a lot of fun playing, but that she belonged in Poland and that’s where she had stories to tell. Talking about the film “Tatarak”, which she shot with Andrzej Wajda, Janda described it as a meeting of two artists, and then immediately interjected “I’m sorry for talking about myself that way”. When the question was asked “you directed “Pestka”, which was very well received…” she put the question straight and said that it was quite the opposite, because the film was very poorly received. And when asked what she thinks about the fact that Helen Mirren points out her name as very important for cinematography, she replied briefly: “It’s very nice.”

Another thing is what questions the actress faced in the program. She was asked what Krystyna Janda laughs at, what Krystyna Janda’s day is like, what Krystyna Janda’s holidays are like, and what would happen if she starred in “Sophie’s Choice” instead of Meryl Streep. How can you not fly away in such an atmosphere?
