The UN concluded this Friday that the Iranian Government committed crimes against humanity in the repression of protests which began in September 2022, following the death in custody of the young Mahsa Amini. The International Fact-Finding Mission that created the UN Human Rights Council pointed out extrajudicial executions, forced disappearencesrape, persecution based on gender.
Since Amini’s death, the pressure for women to wear the hijab increases after the approval of the law on chastity and the use of the hijab. In the video from laSexta Noticias that accompanies this news, you can see how an Iranian police officer justifies a tremendous beating by claiming that the woman blocked the path of his vehicle. In another image, it looks more like they are collecting trash from the streets instead of stoppingunfairly, to a young woman.
The Iranian interpreter and activist, Ryma Sheermohammadi, has assured that “what is happening in Iran is gender apartheid”. “Young women in Iran live in terror of the morality police,” says the activist, and explains that her friends tell her that “when they leave the house, they have at least five or six people behind them.”
We all remember Mahsa Amini, who ended up dead for one reason only: the veil, because she was not “wearing it properly.” “We have all seen the video of Mahsa when she was arrested. She was wearing something wide, she was completely covered. in black with the veil on. But what does it mean to wear the veil properly?” explains Sheermohammadi.
However, his death was not in vain because society reacted and the horror crossed borders. Now the UN in its report denounces that Iran committed crimes against humanity by repressing the protests, it also speaks of extrajudicial executions, torture and rape. “The officials themselves held the detainees to that they were raped by two or three men,” adds the activist.
Iran rejects report and far from retreating, pressure is increasing against women with a new bill. More than 1,000 women who have received SMS and telephone calls are summoned to appear and leave their vehicle: fines, lashes and sentences now of up to 10 years in prison.
But the worst thing is the money that Iran spends on all this: 130 million dollars to maintain 11 institutions that they are dedicated to repressing. Money, which sadly, comes through the taxes that they also pay, the victims of all this barbarity.
