Sweden has officially joined NATO by depositing the accession document to the Atlantic Alliance in Washington. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson delivered the instrument of access to the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, in Washington, certifying his historic entry into the alliance.
The Hungarian ambassador to the United States has delivered to the State Department in Washington the official documents of the ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO recently approved by the Hungarian Parliament. This was reported by the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, in a statement in which he highlights that with this step his country has completed the ratification process.
“Today I have ordered our country’s ambassador in Washington to deliver the ratification document, with which Hungary has fulfilled all its tasks so that Sweden be part of NATO,” he said.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulk Kristersson and his Foreign Minister Tobias Billström traveled to Washington on Wednesday to deposit the NATO accession protocol with the State Department. Hungary was the last partner of the Atlantic Alliance to ratify the integration of the Nordic country, after blocking it for months due to critical Swedish positions with the antidemocratic drift of the Central European country, which Budapest describes as “unfair.”
The Hungarian Parliament approved the ratification of accession on February 26. The symbolic ceremony is expected to be held next Monday to raise the Swedish flag at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
