Donald Tusk referred to trade with Ukraine during a conversation with journalists in Bucharest. The Prime Minister traveled to the capital of Romania in connection with the ongoing congress of the European People’s Party (EPP). – Without reflection, maintaining fully free trade with Ukraine will harm us and Ukraine – he said after his speech.
Donald Tusk appeals to European leaders. “Farmers want a Europe that will defend them”
– If we lose this support for Ukraine, which is not enthusiasm but is common in Europe and Poland, because people are tired of bearing too heavy burdens, we will all lose. And Europe, and Poland, and, above all, Ukraine – said Tusk in a statement quoted by .
The Prime Minister also emphasized that changes will be necessary in the regulations regarding trade with Ukraine “in order to effectively protect the European and Polish markets again.” He also pointed out that it is necessary to look for ways to facilitate and simplify the Green Deal. In Tusk’s assessment, most European leaders are beginning to understand the need for changes in the decisions made immediately after the war began. – I hope that this will turn into joint action at the level of the European Council – he said.
Earlier, during his speech at the congress (EPP), Donald Tusk stated that a decisive reaction of the European Union and defense of their interests will allow Europeans to unite. – Our farmers and producers are waiting for such a signal today. They are patiently waiting for such a signal. They want a Europe that will also defend them and understand their concerns, he emphasized. He then appealed to European leaders on the issue of food security and emphasized that it is “one of the conditions for us to be safe in all aspects.”
European parliament. The Commission supported the extension of trade with Ukraine. Polish amendments were rejected
On the same day, the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee supported the proposal to extend the EU’s duty-free trade with Ukraine until June next year. At the same time, the amendments of Polish MEPs, which softened the provisions of the agreement to meet the expectations of protesting farmers, were rejected. By the decision of the majority of MPs, the European Commission’s proposal was accepted – 26 MEPs were in favor of extending the contract, 10 against. The final stage of the procedure for approving the extension of the contract will be a vote at the plenary session of the European Parliament. It is scheduled to take place next week.
The amendments were submitted by MEPs from the Left and the Civic Platform with the support of Law and Justice. They demanded that when establishing import quotas for sugar, eggs and poultry, the import of products from Ukraine in 2021 should be taken into account. This would result in lower import limits for these products. Nevertheless, the mere introduction of quotas in the current agreement – even if they are higher than expected – will make it more favorable for Polish farmers.
