Latin American presidents greet and congratulate Gabriel Boric, Chile’s new president

Boric will assume power on March 11.

The president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, congratulated the leftist candidate Gabriel Boric on Sunday for having won the presidential elections in Chile and assured that his victory “is that of the Chilean people.”

“Congratulations on the win, my dear friend @gabrielboric! The victory you have achieved is that of the Chilean people! ”, Said the also leftist Castillo in a message posted on his official Twitter account.

The Peruvian president, who assumed the Presidency on July 28 after winning the elections on behalf of the Marxist party Peru Libre, added that Boric’s triumph is shared by “the Latin American peoples” who want to “live with freedom, peace, justice and dignity”.

“Let us continue fighting for the unity of our nations,” he concluded.

Other Latin American presidents also joined in the congratulatory messages. One of them was the Ecuadorian president Guillermo Lasso, who sent a greeting to the Chilean people through his Twitter account.

The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, also congratulated Boric on Sunday for his victory in the presidential elections in Chile, wishing a government “for the good” of that country.

“I congratulate the elected president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, and I wish him success for the good of the Chilean people,” wrote the Uruguayan president on the social network Twitter.

Colombian President Iván Duque published a message on his Twitter account after learning the results of the election in Chile.

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, celebrated this Sunday the triumph of the leftist Gabriel Boric, who won the Presidency of Chile against the far-right José Antonio Kast.

“Great good news from Chile !!!” Ebrard wrote on his official Twitter account after the triumph of the Chilean candidate.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro congratulated Boric and greeted “the people of (the late socialist president) Salvador Allende and (the singer and socialist militant assassinated by the Pinochet dictatorship) Víctor Jara for their resounding victory over fascism.”

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, also mentioned in their congratulations Allende, who was overthrown by Pinochet on September 11, 1973 and who committed suicide that same day, in the midst of the military bombardment that the dictator led to the government house.

“With respect and joy we salute their historic triumph, achieved with the brave Chilean people, inspired by the ever-present legacy of the President of Dignity, Salvador Allende, and of so many heroes and martyrs of that great people,” said the presidential couple in a release.

Argentine President Alberto Fernández, a left-wing Peronist, congratulated Boric and asked him in a tweet “to work together (…) to end inequality in Latin America.” Then he spoke with him on the phone for 10 minutes, and invited him to visit Argentina on his first trip abroad.
