“Vision Zero” is the European idea of minimizing the number of fatal road accidents to zero by 2050. This will be achieved by tightening and unifying road regulations throughout the country. The European Parliament, which is ending its term of office, has adopted a project targeting those who pose a threat. However, its implementation will only be undertaken by the new parliament elected in June.
Loss of driving license for speeding
Due to the introduction of new regulations, it may be easier to lose. Currently, drivers lose their driving license when they exceed the speed limit in built-up areas by 50 km/h. After the changes, drivers who drive 30 km/h more than the regulations allow in residential areas will lose their driving license.
You will lose your driving license in Poland, and you will not be able to drive in Germany either
The regulations regarding the possibility of losing driving licenses in individual countries will also be unified. So far, if a driver loses his driving license as a result of a road offense in a European Union country other than the one that issued it, in most cases the penalty applies only in the country where the offense was committed and does not entail any restrictions in other EU countries.
This means that, for example, losing your driving license in Poland for driving under the influence of alcohol would not apply in . In Poland, the permissible blood alcohol limit is 0.2 per mille for each driver, and in Germany, the permissible limit for experienced drivers is up to 0.5 per mille.
The new regulations will introduce the principle that if you lose your driving license in one EU country, it applies to all countries. Driving without a valid driving license is also being considered to be added to the list of serious driving offenses such as driving under the influence of alcohol or causing a fatal accident. This would enable easier exchange of information between Member States.
– I am convinced that this directive will not only help reduce the number of road accidents, but will also contribute to greater awareness of citizens about more responsible driving and the willingness to comply with the regulations and accept the consequences of breaking them, regardless of where we go in the EU – said Petar Vitanov, rapporteur of the European Parliament.
The European Union will fight against using phones while driving
The scope of the restrictions is still under discussion. Recently, the European Union published , which shows that one of the main reasons for distracted drivers is the use of mobile phones while driving. It has been calculated that using a mobile phone increases the risk of an accident by approximately 2.5 times.
The report’s conclusions propose that the ban on using mobile devices while driving should be more strictly enforced. Smart cameras could be used for this purpose. Other solutions include building lanes into road infrastructure and developing on-board technologies that warn or intervene in the event of leaving the lane or getting too close to the vehicle in front.
