The Kremlin is convinced that the World Health Organization (WHO) will approve the Russian vaccine Sputnik V against COVID-19 within a few months, the Interfax news agency said on Sunday, citing spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
The Kremlin said on Tuesday that Russia had not yet provided all the information necessary for the WHO to approve the vaccine due to differences in regulatory standards.
“I am deeply convinced that literally in a few months … WHO will approve Sputnik and it will also be possible to advance on this path with Europe,” Peskov was quoted as saying by Interfax.
The WHO expects to receive the relevant documents by the end of the year, RIA reported, citing WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic.
Russia reported 1,023 deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday. The country’s death toll is the third highest in the world, behind only the United States and Brazil, according to Reuters calculations.
Peskov described people who refuse to be vaccinated as “dangerous fools,” the TASS agency reported.
Many Russians are reluctant to get vaccinated. Some people say they are hesitant due to mistrust of authorities, while others mention concerns about vaccine safety.
