Urcuquí, IMBABURA
The rainy season puts more than ten families in the San José community at risk, in the La Merced parish of Buenos Aires, in the Urcuquí canton, Imbabura province, in the north of the country.
The constant and prolonged rainfall causes landslides from the upper parts of this sector, where illegal mining continues to be an invariable practice and produces some effects on the soil.
Abel Cárdenas, member of the La Merced parish council of Buenos Aires, reported that the population is in a state of emergency due to the danger and damage caused by landslides due to excessive rainfall.
On December 11, 2021, landslides were recorded in the San Luis community that destroyed three homes, with twelve families immediately evacuated, local authorities reported.

Jimmy Marcillo, director of the northern area of Risk and Emergency Management, confirmed that twelve affected groups are with foster families and pointed out that three houses are semi-destroyed.
“The material that fell partially entered the three houses, leaving the ground unstable, so the victims were transferred to another community, taking their belongings that were not impacted,” added Marcillo.
The official commented that since the previous week they have been coordinating actions with the Municipality, Parish Council and Prefecture to evacuate families and rehabilitate access roads to Buenos Aires affected by bad weather.
Among the measures that are analyzed by the La Merced parish council of Buenos Aires is the relocation of 80 families. The Tierra para Todos Foundation together with the parish government coordinate actions to collect donations that will be delivered to those affected.

Tents, construction materials, household items, clothing, non-perishable food, supplies, and all kinds of help are required that can calm the anguish of those who lost everything, said Abel Cárdenas, a member of the parish government.
Jimmy Marcillo affirmed that they have humanitarian assistance ready to deliver to the affected families, once they have the corresponding technical report, assistance that will be given in the next few hours.
The San Jerónimo-Buenos Aires and Buenos Aires-Cahuasqui roads were enabled. On the other hand, the artery that goes from La Primavera to the productive part of San Luis presents two cuts, due to the fact that the road table was left in both points.
It is planned to build a variant to enable the passage to the land and properties. (I)
