The IEA is going to establish an encrypted control of commitments against climate change

The International Energy Agency (IEA) will establish, starting next month, an encrypted control device for the commitments assumed by countries in action against climate change because it considers that the priority now is the real and effective application of those commitments.

“The objectives are good. “Now governments have to do what they say.”its executive director, Fatih Birol, stressed this Tuesday in a high-level round table organized at its headquarters in Paris in which, among others, the president of the COP28 which was held in Dubai, Sultan Al Jaber.

Birol explained that, as at the IEA “we like numbers”, as of March 1, this encrypted device will be launched to monitor whether there are differences “between what is said and what is done.”

At COP28, which concluded in December, the almost 200 participating countries agreed in particular to progressively abandon fossil fuels to try to meet the goal of limiting climate warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Al Yaber has considered that “historic” and “unprecedented” achievements were achieved, and has emphasized that for the first time “a fair, orderly and responsible (energy) transition has been established”, which in his opinion proves that “ there is a will and a path” and also “that multilateralism is alive.”

Above all, the president of the COP28 He has indicated that these commitments must now be applied, that “this work must begin now” without delay, and that more financing will be needed, for which public money will not be enough, but that more private capital will have to be mobilized.

“We have to get trillions (of dollars), not billions,” has pointed out after indicating that it now seems that the goal set in 2010 for developed countries to dedicate US$ 100,000 million annually to help developing countries adapt to the climate change.

On this issue of financing, Birol has drawn attention to the fact that although last year US$ 1.8 billion were invested in clean energy, a figure that IEA considered globally sufficient for climate objectives, only 15% of that amount went to emerging and developing countries.

The executive director of this organization that brings together rich countries also wanted to emphasize the importance of the upcoming nationally determined contributions (NDC) to which governments commit, and he said that has received requests from some to assist them with figures and calculations.

The national secretary for climate change of Brazil, Ana Toni, participated in this high-level table by videoconference, because her country will organize COP30 in 2025 and therefore is part of the troika that has been formed together with the representatives of COP28. Dubai and COP29 in Azerbaijan.

In his speech, Toni highlighted that beyond the objectives that many countries have already presented for climate mitigation, climate changenow what is needed are “detailed plans” accompanied by financing. “Implementation,” he said, “is what has to guide us now.”

The director of the IEA has announced, on the other hand, that on May 14 a conference will be organized to try to obtain the US$ 4,000 million that has been estimated to be necessary so that in sub-Saharan Africa there can be a transition to systems for cook ‘clean’.

The aim is to prevent, essentially, women from the health problems derived from the contamination they suffer when cooking with firewood or waste, a situation that affects four out of every five families in that region.
