Farmers were to block Biedronka’s warehouses. They saw the amount of potential compensation and gave up

Farmers took to the streets again to protest, among others. against the EU Green Deal, changes in the Common Agricultural Policy and uncontrolled import of food products from Ukraine. Biedronka was also targeted by the demonstrators.

Another wave of agricultural protests is sweeping across Poland. On Tuesday, hunters also joined them. One of the demonstrators’ plans was to block the road to the distribution center of Jeronimo Martins, the owner of, among others, Biedronki, which is located in the Stawiguda commune near Olsztyn. – We will block this network because it imports goods from Ukraine. And this hits us, agricultural producers, hard – announced the Representative of the Polish Agricultural Union Agrounia, Michał Kempka, in an interview with .

The court curbed farmers’ plans for Biedronka

However, the mayor of the Stawiguda commune, Michał Kontraktowicz, did not agree to hold protests on municipal roads. In his opinion, such actions would cause too much loss. The farmers decided to appeal, but the District Court in Olsztyn upheld the mayor’s decision.

– We emphasize that the uninterrupted operation of the Distribution Center in Stawiguda is the basis for the regular supply of 213 Biedronka stores, mainly located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, with first-need food products. In this context, any blockade would be most painful for residents who shop at Biedronka chain stores every day, said Arkadiusz Mierzwa, communications director at the Biedronka chain.

Representatives of Jeronimo Martins also commented during the negotiations. As Kontraktowicz emphasized, the company’s representatives informed that the blockade of their distribution center would lead to losses of up to PLN 120 million, he reports. – Blocking warehouses of retail chains is inevitable. We want to give ourselves more time to secure the protests legally. We are afraid that companies would sue for compensation people who report gatherings at municipal offices – one of the protest leaders explained to the website.

Farmers will move to Olsztyn. Protests will not spare the capital of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship

– We do not agree with the court’s decision, we consider it unfair. But we will not appeal against it because we no longer have time, Michał Kempka told PAP. – Biedronka says that we want to expose them to losses, and they have been exposing us to losses for years – he added.

Due to the court’s decision, farmers who were supposed to block the road to JM’s warehouses joined the protesters in Olsztyn. According to the local website, on Tuesday (February 20) they gathered in front of the Provincial Office. Ultimately, approximately 600 tractors are expected to gather there. According to the announcement, the demonstrators want to stay in front of the office until Thursday.
