The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced on Monday that it is investigating the disappearance of 23,000 people during the conflict between Russia and Ukraineunleashed almost two years ago.
“Not having news of a loved one is a real ordeal, a permanent anguish. “This is the tragic reality of tens of thousands of family members,” declared Dusan Vujasanin, head of the ICRC Central Tracing Agency Office, created in March 2022 within the framework of the conflict.
“They have the right to know what happened to them and, to the extent possible, communicate with them,” added the head of this office that searches for missing people from both sides, “who have been captured, killed or separated from their own” due to the fighting.
“In the last two years, the ICRC has received more than 115,000 requests to search for family members in Ukraine and Russia”indicated the Institution.
“Until January 31, 2024, the ICRC […] helped 8,000 families obtain information about the fate or whereabouts of their loved ones,” says a statement.
