British Brexit negotiator resigns over government policies against COVID-19, according to local media

Frost opposed the new government restrictions in his fight against the coronavirus.

British Minister David Frost, who led Brexit negotiations with Boris Johnson, is leaving government, according to Sunday The Mail on Sunday.

This newspaper, which cites a senior cabinet official as a source, affirmed that Frost will leave his post in January 2022 due to the “disappointment” posed by the course of government policy.

The Downing Street office, Johnson’s residence, did not immediately respond to AFP’s questions, in what would be a further setback for the weakened Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The Sunday newspaper reported on its web version that Frost submitted his resignation a week ago, but was convinced to hold out until New Years.

This source, who remained anonymous, said that Frost was opposed to the new government restrictions in his fight against the coronavirus, as well as the climate goal of “net zero” emissions and the increase in taxes.

Johnson’s situation is very precarious after the rebellion this week by 100 MPs from his party in the vote on restrictions against the pandemic, and the loss of a seat in a local election.

In addition, weeks before a scandal had broken out when it became known that a party was being held in Downing Street at Christmas 2020, despite the restrictions in force at that time.

The loss of the by-election sparked speculation among the Conservatives about Johnson’s leadership of the party, and Frost could run for that job. (I)
