China sentences former bank president to death for corruption

The former president of the Chinese bank China Merchants Bank, Tian Huiyu, was sentenced this Monday to a suspended death sentence, state television CCTV announced, within the framework of a major anti-corruption campaign by President Xi Jinping against the financial sector.

Death sentences of this type are usually commuted to life imprisonment after two years of imprisonment.

Tian Huiyu was found guilty of accepting bribes, abuse of power in a public company, trading based on confidential information, abuse of inside information and leaking confidential information for decades, CCTV reported.

In April 2022, Tian Huiyu was the subject of a public investigation, within the framework of an anti-corruption campaign that increasingly targets the financial sector.

Several former officials of China Development Bank and other state entities were also arrested on suspicion of bribery.

Since coming to power in 2012, Chinese President Xi Jinping has led a strict campaign against corruption among officials and heads of public companies.

According to his detractors, the campaign also allows Xi Jinping to rule out possible political adversaries.
