The figure of immigrants arrived in Spain irregularly during the month of January of this year multiplied by six in relation to the same date last year, as reported this Thursday by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.
In total, 8,067 immigrants arrived in Spain in the first month of this year, 6,775 more than in the same period of 2023, when 1,292 people entered the country.
Of these, the vast majority, 7,270, arrived in the Canary Islands, via the so-called Atlantic route, in 110 boats, which is 6,704 more people than a year ago.
Arrivals by sea to the Canary Islands continue to increase the numbers after 2023 in which 39,910 immigrants were counted on these islands, which exceeded the number registered in 2006, when the archipelago experienced the so-called ‘cayucos crisis’ and they arrived by boat. 31,678 foreigners.
Entries to the peninsula and the Balearic Islands through the Mediterranean also increased, in this case by 12.7%. A total of 703 people arrived in 55 boats, compared to the 624 who arrived in 2023, in 68 boats.
On the other hand, no person has arrived irregularly by sea to Ceuta, on the African coast, so far this year, while only one has arrived to neighboring Melilla.
By land from Morocco, 93 people have accessed these two autonomous cities irregularly so far this year, which translates into 6.9% compared to 2023: 90 arrived in Ceuta (10 more than a year ago) and 3 to Melilla (4 less than in 2023).
