Toyota Rav4 is no longer the best-selling vehicle in the world: this model surpassed it

The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car in the world in 2023, unprecedented for an electric vehicle, surpassing the Toyota Rav4 thanks to its competitive price, according to preliminary data published on Thursday by the Jato Dynamics office.

Sales of the Tesla Model Y grew 64% in one year to reach 1.23 million units, Tesla announced Wednesday evening.

This achievement marks the current revolution in the automobile market: it is the first time that an electric vehicle leads global sales of new cars without distinction of engine type.

Tesla’s small SUV surpassed the Toyota Rav4 (1.07 million) and the Toyota Corolla (1.01 million), the two models of the Japanese automobile giant that dominated the ranking in recent years.

The Tesla Y led the Chinese and European markets, where the supply and sales of electric vehicles skyrocketed, and came in fifth position in the United States, behind three pickup trucks and the Toyota Rav4.

This sales growth is unprecedented”, indicated analyst Felipe Muñoz, from Jato Dynamics. “What Tesla has achieved with its Model Y in such a short time is simply impressive”.

The Y, launched in 2020, is assembled in three giant factories in California, China and Berlin and accounts for two-thirds of the American manufacturer’s sales.

The model leads the price war launched by Tesla for electric vehicles: its average price was 18% and 23% lower, respectively, than the average price of an electric car in the United States and Germany in November 2023, according to Jato .

The discounts announced during the year, added to Tesla’s reputation as a manufacturer of reliable and competitive electric vehicles, helped reinforce an already significant demand“explained Muñoz.

Tesla also retained its lead as the largest seller of electric cars during the year, but the company was overtaken by Chinese manufacturer BYD in the latest quarter.

Jato Dynamics carried out its classification based on the sales figures of the main automotive markets around the world in 2023, from North America to China, through Europe and Latin America. The final data will be published in the second quarter of 2024.
