Darryl George, an 18-year-old black American, He has not been able to attend his class at the Texas high school since August 31. The reason is her hairstyle. Her school district says long hair violates a dress code which limits children from wearing their hair long and down. The young man has long hair, although with carefully combed dreadlocks, something that is not enough for his center.
However, this clear discrimination collides head-on with a new rule in force in the state of Texas. Last September, just a few days after its passage, the CROWN law came into effect, prohibiting hair discrimination based on race and prohibits employers and schools from penalizing students for hair texture or hairstyles.
Even so, during this half year he has been carrying out an external disciplinary program. The young man and his family, as the video shows, claim that this punishment, which they describe as unfair, is causing him stress because, he says, African-Americans’ hair is different. “Why me? Of everyone at school, why me?” the young man asks himself.
However, this family has not given up and the case has reached the courts. A judge has set a trial for February 22, when it will be decided whether or not he can return to school. “I want them to change their policies. I want them to stop being discriminated against for being black. Not just mine, but every other black child,” says the boy’s mother, Darresha George. The mother believes that the sanction against the young man can be classified as an act of racism, and the conclusion of this litigation could set precedents for similar cases.
