In 2019, after twenty years of complex negotiations, the two blocs announced that they had reached a free trade agreement. But the pact – supported by the German industrial sector and resisted by French farmers – remains pending, amid disagreements that currently focus on the protection of the Amazon.
The tone has changed favorably after the return to power of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brazil, who promised to combat deforestation, although new conditions presented by the EU on environmental issues have created tensions between the partners of the southern bloc.
