The Bundestag, the Lower House of the Federal Parliament of Germany, has given the ‘green light’ this Thursday to a bill to facilitate the deportation of migrants thanks to the votes of the coalition formed by the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens.

Both the deputies of the ultra Alternative for Germany party (AfD) and those of the Christian Social Union (CSU) have voted against it, considering that the initiative should be toughened, as reported by the ‘ARD’ television channel.

One of the measures included in the law is extending the detention period for migrants from 10 to 28 days so that authorities can guarantee deportationalthough minors will be protected in these processes.

In addition, the powers of the Police will be expanded to clarify the nationality of the foreigner. This, for example, will allow officials to search other rooms in the event that the migrant lives in a shared address.

The law allows asylum seekers to start working after six months instead of the current nine. The duration of the benefits will be extended from one and a half to three years, according to ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’.

The standard also includes that Hate crimes due to anti-Semitism may be considered “serious” to proceed with deportation. The same case will apply for racist, xenophobic, gender or sexual orientation reasons. Likewise, penalties for smuggling will be significantly increased.
