Little by little, more details are becoming known that caused the tragedy in Cerro Muriano (Córdoba), headquarters of the ‘Guzmán el Bueno’ X Brigade, where two soldiers, aged 24 and 34, respectively, lost their lives during military maneuvers. This Tuesday, Luis Romero, lawyer who represents the deceased Carlos León, assures that the captain of the section “put his life at risk”, as well as that of the “corporal who died, that of the one who was unconscious and had to be resuscitated and that of everyone else”.

“That day a series of circumstances occurred that put the lives of more than 75 soldiers at risk, of which only 15 entered the water, luckily, and the others were able to rescue them,” the lawyer denounced. As has been learned in the last few hours, during the practice, which consisted of submerging in a lake in the Andalusian province whose waters were icy, about twenty soldiers – out of a total of 60 – carried a weight in their backpack as a ‘ punishment’ for a practice poorly performed in a previous year.

An extra weight that ended up causing León’s death by drowning. “They were carrying out the captain’s orders, and we have no doubt that the culprits are Captain Zúñiga and the entire command order,” said Romero, who has also pointed out the Ministry of Defense. During the presentation of the facts, the lawyer has assured, contrary to what military sources have stated to laSexta, that during this deadly practice “there was not a lifeline, but rather a guide rope that served for distance and that was placed on one side of the lake, not in the center.

“What there was was a rope attached to two trees at both ends and a carabiner. Under instructions from the captain, (the members of the section that participated in the test) could only hold on in case of death. Therefore, in order not to disobey the order, the ropes in danger did not hold on until the end, and when they did, the rope was loose and sank,” said Romero, who added: “In addition, at that moment the captain gave the order to release the rope , and it came loose from the tree, causing them to sink even further” into “murky waters about three meters deep.”
