After being imprisoned for 17 months for doing their job, Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi They have been released. Both women reported the death of Mahsa Amini, now celebrating her release. During this time, they have been accused of collaborating with the United States government and conspiring against national security.
Hamedi published a photo of Amini’s parents in the hospital and another of the young woman in a coma. For her work, they were awarded the UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize in May 2023. Mohammadi covered her funeral in her hometown and described how hundreds of attendees shouted “Woman, life and freedom“.
Sentenced to 12 and 13 years in prison, they are now awaiting their appeal in freedom on bail of $200,000, which is a century of the average salary of an Iranian. This same Monday, the justice system reopened a new case against the two journalists, this time for appearing without a hijab during their release. Hours later, Iran has added 15 months in prison to the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Narges Mohammadi.
In recent months, the activist had denounced the revolutionary courts for the issuance of death sentences against young people in the country. As of November 2021, she is in prison serving a 10-year sentence.
